PRESS RELEASE

St. John’s, NL, August 19, 2016: Newman Sound Men’s Choir are ecstatic to perform alongside one of Europe’s leading men’s chorus from the Basque Country, Coro Easo, to undertake a choral project exploring a shared history of Basque whalers and fisherman in Newfoundland and Labrador. The Basque Country and Newfoundland and Labrador share strong cultural and musical traditions, in large measure shaped by the land and sea. As well, both are noted for their strong choral traditions.

Newman Sound Men’s Choir and Coro Easo will together take part in the touring component of the annual “Quincena Musical de San Sebastián” (Classical Music Fortnight) held in August 2016 in the City of San Sebastián. This will see the two choirs travel to four coastal towns in the Basque Country where they will perform together songs of the sea from their respective traditions.

“We are so thrilled to visit San Sebastián and have the opportunity to explore and support cultural collaboration between our two regions,” says Artistic Director of Newman Sound Men’s Choir, Jennifer Hart. “We see this project as an opportunity to use song as a means of creating greater awareness on both sides of the Atlantic about our shared history of the Basque whalers and fishermen in Newfoundland and Labrador.”

As a legacy piece, both choirs have commissioned new works that tell the story of the whale, the whaler, and the hunt. These works by Canadian Composer Kathleen Allan and Basque Composer Angel Illarramendi, employ English, Latin, and Basque languages, and will form a contribution to the musical repertoire of both Newfoundland & Labrador and the Basque Country.

Newman Sound Men’s Choir will travelling from August 20th to August 28th.
